Types of US Gold Coins
Over the course of its existence, the US Treasury has produced a variety of gold coinage. Some of these coins are among the most prized by collectors. US gold coins are easy to verify in terms of their authenticity. The quality of the materials and the amount of bullion used in the coin are backed by the US government. This makes these coins easy to trace back to their origins and makes them a safe purchase.
Among the various types of US gold coinage are American Eagle gold coins. These are currently in production and have been since 1986. These coins feature classic American designs. On the obverse side of the coin is Lady Liberty. On the back are two bald eagles, one of which is carrying an olive branch. This sort of bold artwork has made US coins very popular with those who collect principally for aesthetic reasons.
Some other interesting US designs include the First Spouse series, honoring the partners of the presidents featured on the new run of $1 coins. The Buffalo Coin designs harkens back to one of the US’s most popular designs, with a profile portrait of a Native American man on the front and a buffalo on the reverse. Both of these designs are .999 fine gold. The First Spouse series has a face value of $10, while the Buffalo Coin has a face value of $50. Both of these values are substantially lower than the value of their bullion.
